Want your photography to be the next to hang in the Usdan Center? In partnership with the Office of International Studies, the Usdan Art Committee is sponsoring a second photo contest for study abroaders, international students, and others who have spent substantive time abroad. As with the international photo contest of the past, photos will be displayed in Zelnick Pavilion around the middle of the spring semester. Entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of Wesleyan experts in art, communication, and international affairs. The top ten photos will also be enlarged to 24″ x 36″ (or largest size allowed by the resolution of the original) and hung in Usdan common areas after Spring Break. At the end of the show, winners will receive their enlarged print as a prize.

Guidelines:

  • Eligibility: Open to all students of Wesleyan University; all entries must be original work.
  • Submit up to ten photographs to tshiner@wesleyan.edu by February 1, 2010 or by dropping them off on CD-Rom at 124 Usdan.
  • Include your name, class year, a title and a description of the photo(s) of no more than 100 words. The description should include information on where and when the photo was taken, as well as the significance of the subject matter in local context and in the context of your experience studying abroad. By submitting photos, you are agreeing to permit them to be shown in Usdan, Zelnick, and/or Fisk Hall, as well as on the OIS web site.
  • Photographs will be selected to display in Zelnick Pavilion by mid-February. Of those selected, a panel of judges will choose ten winners to be enlarged and displayed in the Usdan Center.
  • Copyright: Wesleyan University reserves the right to publish winning images in Usdan University Center/Office of International Studies printed materials or websites. Photo credit will be provided, of course (that doesn’t mean academic credit for a photography class just your name somewhere in the vicinity of the photograph).
  • Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person or submit images that involve the willful harassment of individuals, wildlife or damage to the environment by the photographer.

WesWars Congratulations

From AhDream Smith ’12

On behalf of the Cardinal Council I would just like to say CONGRATULATIONS on winning WesWars. I would like to give a special thanks to the members of the class that came out during the field day, participated throughout the week in the various games, and the team that showed up for the Scavenger Hunt and made our victory possible.

Initially we had scheduled a class photo after the Homecoming game, but due to various factors the picture was rescheduled. The new date is scheduled for Dec. (TBA) at 12:45pm in front of Usdan on the steps (if there is bad weather the photo will be taken at the bottom of the spiral staircase inside of Usdan). Following the class photo, the participants of WesWars will attend at dinner hosted by Dean Mike Whaley on behalf of the class. This photo will hang in Usdan along with the class key for the remainder of the school year.

Once again I would like to say congratulations and I look forward to seeing you all at Usdan for the class photo op.

weswarsAs you may have heard, the Sophomore class won WesWars 2009.  The seniors were in the lead for most of the week but at the Scavenger Hunt on the last day, the sophomores found the Douglas Cannon at the base of Foss Hill and won the entire game.

Michael Roth announced the winners at halftime of the football game and presented the Class Key to AhDream Smith ’12 at the 50 yard line.

Check out this photo of the Douglas Cannon and a link to the Blargus video that really captures the excitement of the day.

In an effort to collaborate and combine programming efforts, a new committee has been established. The Usdan Common Connections Committee is looking to work with musical performers within the Wesleyan Community to provide opportunities to showcase your talents.

These performances will take many different forms and will happen in a variety of venues. We are currently planning a series of Coffee House performances that will feature two or three artists or groups and will likely be held in the Daniel Family Commons on the third floor of Usdan. The committee is also putting together a “Last Waltz”esque jam that will happen on December 14th in the Marketplace Dining wing. This event is tentatively being billed as “Classes Ending on a Good Note.”

Our hope is that throughout the year many different performers or groups will take advantage of the opportunity to let the Usdan Common Connections Committee plan their performance event. If you have ideas for performances or would like to play in either a Coffee House or in the December jam, please contact Michelle Myers-Brown via email (mmyersbrown@wesleyan.edu) for more details.

If you, or your group, are interested in performing in Usdan at these or other events, please email Michelle Myers-Brown by 11/20/09.

We look forward to hosting performances that showcase the diverse musical styles and the musicians helping to continue the tradition of great music at Wesleyan.
