Please read the following information from the Office of Residential Life:

Thanksgiving Break
As you prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday, remember to LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS whether you will be remaining on campus or leaving for the break.  Also, please consider taking home your bikes and other belongings that you will not need through the winter.

If you are staying on campus over the break period, please remember to walk in well lit areas after dark, preferably in groups, and report suspicious people to Public Safety immediately at 860-685-3333 or x-3333 from a campus phone line.  Although the RIDE program will not be operating Thursday through Saturday, Public Safety will provide escorts for individuals upon request.  Public Safety’s general phone number is 860-685-2345.

Preparing for Winter Break
As you finalize your travel arrangements for the winter break, remember residential units will close for the fall semester at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, December 18, 2011.  All residential units, with the exception of the wood frame houses, will close at this time.  Students can return to campus at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

Seniors who live in wood frame houses can stay in their houses during winter break.  Students who want to stay in their wood frame house over break need to register with Residential Life by Saturday, December 17, 2011 so that the University knows when houses are completely vacant (movement will indicate a burglary and approached as such) and when occupied (in the event of necessary repairs being done).  The registration form is available on the Residential Life website at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife/Forms/wood_frame_winter_break_form.html.

There will be a limited number of employment opportunities for students looking for work on campus during winter break.  Students wishing to do so must request housing with Residential Life by, Thursday, December 1, 2011.   Requests should be made through the Winter Break web site at: http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife/ugrad_housing/winter_closing.html.

Please note:  Housing is not guaranteed during the winter break period, students who are granted permission to live in their units during the break will be notified via email on December 9, 2011.

This is a reminder to students that all residential units will close for the fall semester at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, December 18, 2011.  All residential units, with the exception of wood frame houses, will close at this time; students who wish to stay in their wood frame house must register with Residential Life online at http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife/Forms/wood_frame_winter_break_form.html.

Students can return to campus at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

International students and student athletes will receive information regarding winter break housing from either the Office of International Student Services or their coach.

Students who wish to return to campus early must submit an online application located at http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife/Forms/winter_break_form.html. This application is due on Thursday, December 1, 2011 – no exceptions.  Please also note that all applications will be scrutinized and there is no guarantee that your request can be processed.

***Furthermore, students who are moving into a new assignment will not be able to pick-up their keys before Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.

There will be a limited number of employment opportunities for students looking for work on campus during winter break.  Students wishing to do so must request housing with the Office of Residential Life by Thursday, December 1, 2011.

In order to maximize class appropriate spaces for students returning from leave/abroad, the Office of Residential Life will not process Room Change Requests after November 18, 2011.  Students interested in making a room change after this date must wait until two weeks into the spring semester, after all returning students have been placed.  Requests to pull-in a student into a spring vacancy can be made until December 7, 2011.

Any questions regarding these processes should be directed to Residential Life at 860-685-3550 or at reslife@wesleyan.edu.

The residential units will close for the fall semester at 12 p.m. (noon) on Sunday, December 18, 2011. All residential units, with the exception of wood frame houses, will close at this time.  The residential units will officially open for the spring semester at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.  Some units will open prior to this date to accommodate student athletes, international students, and other students who are required to be on campus during the break.

It is extremely important that students be employed for essential services only, due to heightened concern for students’ safety, the limited services available for students during the break period, and the University’s efforts to conserve energy.  If you do need to hire a student to work during the break period, the student must submit a request for housing to the Office of Residential Life prior to Thursday, December 1, 2011.  All students must apply online at www.wesleyan.edu/reslife and click on “Winter Break Closing Information” on our web page.

Residential Life will NOT be able to accept any requests for winter break housing after Thursday, December 1, 2011.  Furthermore, all employers should notify Sean Martin in the Financial Aid Office if they need to hire students during winter break, regardless of whether or not the student will be receiving financial aid.

Once we identify all of the students who need to stay in housing during the break, we will determine which residential units will open prior to January 24, 2012.  Please keep in mind that although a student may be working for you, they are not guaranteed housing during this time, and may need to make alternate accommodations.  We will notify all students who have applied of their status via email by December 9, 2011.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone at x3550 or by e-mail at sphelps@wesleyan.edu.

Residential Life is providing alternative housing in lounges for students in residences without power. Students should contact Residential Life at 860-685-3550 by 11 p.m. if they are interested in staying in a lounge.  Once they contact Residential Life, card access will be provided and students will be registered for the lounge to offset overcrowding.

Please contact the Office of Residential Life if you have any questions at 860-685-3550.

As your begin making your summer plans, please remember that all residential units must be vacated by Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 12 p.m. (noon). Only graduating seniors and students who have been pre-approved by the Office of Residential Life can remain in their rooms after 12 p.m. (noon) on May 14, 2011.

Students who fail to check out of their rooms will incur a late checkout fine of $250.00 and may also incur per diem charges until they vacate their rooms.  This includes moving all items out of the room and the key returned to Residential Life.

Physical Plant Room Inspections: After you move out, Physical Plant will conduct an inspection.  A complete list of fines can be found at http://www.wesleyan.edu/pplant/housingguidelines.htm. Your student account will be charged for any damage, missing furniture, or cleaning services that are required.  All floors, walls, sinks, tubs/showers, refrigerators, and stoves should be clean and in good condition.  This includes removing anything you may have on your door.  A guideline you should use is that your residential space should be found in the same condition as when you moved in.

If you have official University business (i.e. work or classes) and need to remain on campus after 12 p.m. (noon) on May 14, 2011, you must apply for an extension with ResLife. Applications are available at http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife/.  Please note that applying for an extension does not guarantee approval, as only extenuating circumstances will be considered.  Applications are due on Friday, April 29, 2011.

Students who are approved to stay past 12 p.m. (noon) on May 14, 2011 will be required to move out of their spring housing assignment into alternate housing if they live in Hewitt, Fauver Residence Hall, Clark Hall, German or Russian House.

Graduating seniors are automatically approved to stay in their current housing assignment until 4:30 pm on Monday, May 23, 2011 and do not have to submit an application.

All students will receive a key return envelope in their University mailbox on April 29th. Students are expected to return this envelope with housing keys to the Office of Residential Life.

Students who have compost buckets, please return them at the end of the semester to the shed behind Turath House (22 Lawn) near Hall Atwater.

Students who wish to donate unwanted items to be recycled are encouraged to participate in Waste Not!  Waste Not! drop-off points will be distributed throughout lounges and hallways across campus.  Students living in program houses or woodframes should email wesustainability@gmail.com to arrange for a pick up.

Want to help with one of the most exciting sustainable events on campus? Want to volunteer with the Waste Not! Tag Sale this spring? Housing during Senior Week and the two days following Senior Class Move-Out is guaranteed in exchange for volunteers’ commitment to working with Waste Not! during this time. The volunteer team will be collecting and organizing donated items in preparation for the huge move-in sale we hold in September. All proceeds go to local charities and sustainability projects at Wesleyan. Please fill out this form by April 21st if interested. Space is limited, apply ASAP.

  • Secure windows and doors when you are not at home to prevent unwanted entries and thefts.
  • The only furniture which should be brought outside (which includes balconies and porches) is plastic outdoor furniture.  Upholstered and wooden furniture pose fire hazards, and may become home to bugs and four legged creatures.

Bring pride to your wood-frame or program house! Do it in the Dark is Wesleyan’s wood-frame energy competition! Make a conscious effort to reduce your energy consumption and you and your housemates could win gift certificates to a restaurant of your choice in Middletown! We reward participants in two categories: lowest overall consumption (controlled for the houses’ square footage and outside temperature) and the greatest percentage of decline in consumption in the same house during the same month, last year (to control for specific differences in each house’s efficiency). The winners for January have just been calculated and the winners in these categories were 6 Fountain Ave and 37 Home Ave, respectively. Congratulations, energy-savers!

Make April the month that your house wins! The results will continue to be posted on wesustainability.blogspot.com, check it out to see how your house does and get energy saving tips!

The Alcohol and Other Drugs Committee is sponsoring a forum this Thursday, March 24, for students interested in discussing alcohol-free event opportunities on campus. The gathering will take place in Daniel Family Commons from 6-7 p.m., and dinner from Typhoon will be provided.

Student members of the committee will be running the forum, providing information on resources available (such as how to submit a request for SBC funding), and will be encouraging all attendees to brainstorm event ideas.

One of the goals of this forum is to identify students who are interested in taking a leadership role in expanding upon the social opportunities currently available on any given weekend. The committe looks forward to seeing you there!
