Guidelines:

• Eligibility: Open to all students of Wesleyan University; all entries must be original work.
• Submit up to ten photographs to tshiner@wesleyan.edu by February 1, 2010 or by dropping them off on CD-Rom at 124 Usdan.
• Include your name, class year, a title and a description of the photo(s) of no more than 100 words. The description should include information on where and when the photo was taken, as well as the significance of the subject matter in local context and in the context of your experience studying abroad. By submitting photos, you are agreeing to permit them to be shown in Usdan, Zelnick, and/or Fisk Hall, as well as on the OIS web site.
• Photographs will be selected to display in Zelnick Pavilion by mid-February. Of those selected, a panel of judges will choose ten winners to be enlarged and displayed in the Usdan Center.
• Copyright: Wesleyan University reserves the right to publish winning images in Usdan University Center/Office of International Studies printed materials or websites. Photo credit will be provided, of course (that doesn’t mean academic credit for a photography class ­ just your name somewhere in the vicinity of the photograph).
• Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person or submit images that involve the willful harassment of individuals, wildlife or damage to the environment by the photographer.

Wednesday April 22, 2009 3:00-5:00 p.m.

This has become known around campus as “the Rice Show,” because we had to order and install 11,000 lbs of uncooked, long grain rice. The show demonstrates statistics about people, history, culture and science by representing a person with a single grain of rice.

This show is special from previous installations of the show because, as part of the Feet to the Fire Initiative, the show will also feature statistics about Global Warming and Climate Change generated by the students in E&ES/BIOL 197, Introduction to Environmental Studies class, last fall.

There will be many statistics about Wesleyan, its history, as well as statistics about Middletown, CT and the US — all done with the famous wit and artistic sense that is the hallmark of Stan’s Cafe.

So, come join us for the celebration this evening for the opening of “Of All the People in All the World, USA” (The Rice Show)

The Derge Parkhang is one of the foremost cultural, social, religious and historical institutions in Tibet. Founded in 1729 by Denba Tseren, the Derge Parkhang today is an active center for publication and distribution of Buddhist texts and images, preeminent examples of the Tibetan woodcut printing tradition. The exhibition’s large, finely cut prints of buddhas, protective deities and tara, together with astrological charts, story prints and charms were specially printed from some of the 300,000 blocks in the Parkhang collection. They open a fascinating window into the beliefs, symbols and learning of Tibetan Buddhism. Photographs and video introduce the people of Derge who have preserved and revived the Parkhang’s position as one of the most precious pearls of Tibet’s living culture.

Opening and gallery talk with curator Patrick Dowdey will take place on Wednesday, September 10, at 12:00 noon in the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies (343 Washington Terrace). A luncheon buffet will be served.

Professor Tucker will introduce the series with a lecture on “Ten Photographs that Shook the World” at the Green Street Art Center on Tuesday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m.
