Want your photography to be the next to hang in the Usdan Center? In partnership with the Office of International Studies, the Usdan Art Committee is sponsoring a second photo contest for study abroaders, international students, and others who have spent substantive time abroad. As with the international photo contest of the past, photos will be displayed in Zelnick Pavilion around the middle of the spring semester. Entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of Wesleyan experts in art, communication, and international affairs. The top ten photos will also be enlarged to 24″ x 36″ (or largest size allowed by the resolution of the original) and hung in Usdan common areas after Spring Break. At the end of the show, winners will receive their enlarged print as a prize.

Guidelines:

Eligibility: Open to all students of Wesleyan University; all entries must be original work.

Submit up to ten photographs to tshiner@wesleyan.edu by February 1, 2010 or by dropping them off on CD-Rom at 124 Usdan.

Include your name, class year, a title and a description of the photo(s) of no more than 100 words. The description should include information on where and when the photo was taken, as well as the significance of the subject matter in local context and in the context of your experience studying abroad. By submitting photos, you are agreeing to permit them to be shown in Usdan, Zelnick, and/or Fisk Hall, as well as on the OIS web site.

Photographs will be selected to display in Zelnick Pavilion by mid-February. Of those selected, a panel of judges will choose ten winners to be enlarged and displayed in the Usdan Center.

Copyright: Wesleyan University reserves the right to publish winning images in Usdan University Center/Office of International Studies printed materials or websites. Photo credit will be provided, of course (that doesn’t mean academic credit for a photography class just your name somewhere in the vicinity of the photograph).

Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person or submit images that involve the willful harassment of individuals, wildlife or damage to the environment by the photographer.

On view will be the first edition of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (London, 1859), modern artists’ books that address issues of global warming, books made of recycled materials, archival materials that document the changing Wesleyan landscape, and more. You’ll even get a chance to see some creative ways to repurpose, recycle, and reuse vestiges of the old card catalog.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to see Earth, the largest, heaviest book in the collection, and perhaps the last comprehensive atlas that will ever be printed. For more about Earth, see http://www.millenniumhouse.com.au/title-earth.html Also on view will be a hand-colored copy of the 1575 edition of the first comprehensive atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, by Abraham Ortelius.

This has become known around campus as “the Rice Show,” because we had to order and install 11,000 lbs of uncooked, long grain rice. The show demonstrates statistics about people, history, culture and science by representing a person with a single grain of rice.

This show is special from previous installations of the show because, as part of the Feet to the Fire Initiative, the show will also feature statistics about Global Warming and Climate Change generated by the students in E&ES/BIOL 197, Introduction to Environmental Studies class, last fall.

There will be many statistics about Wesleyan, its history, as well as statistics about Middletown, CT and the US — all done with the famous wit and artistic sense that is the hallmark of Stan’s Cafe.

So, come join us for the celebration this evening for the opening of “Of All the People in All the World, USA” (The Rice Show)

Selected from the collection of the Davison Art Center, the show highlights works by Thomas Annan, Julia Margaret Cameron, Jacob Riis, Alfred Stieglitz, Carleton Watkins and many more. Photographers documented distant monuments, the American West, the Civil War and urban poverty. Yet photographers also created narratives and promoted the aesthetic opportunities of the new media. Document or art? In the 19th century, photographs could be either, or both.

Founded in 1729 by Denba Tseren, the Derge Parkhang today is an active center for publication and distribution of Buddhist texts and images, preeminent examples of the Tibetan woodcut printing tradition. The exhibition’s large, finely cut prints of buddhas, protective deities and tara, together with astrological charts, story prints and charms were specially printed from some of the 300,000 blocks in the Parkhang collection. They open a fascinating window into the beliefs, symbols and learning of Tibetan Buddhism. Photographs and video introduce the people of Derge who have preserved and revived the Parkhang’s position as one of the most precious pearls of Tibet’s living culture.

Opening and gallery talk with curator Patrick Dowdey will take place on Wednesday, September 10, at 12:00 noon in the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies (343 Washington Terrace).
